Description
The Wild Rivers Recreation Area near Cerro, New Mexico is minutes away from our farm. It is about a half hour drive north from Taos. This area has so much to offer, minus the crowds. The camping is excellent whether down at riverside or up on the canyon rim. There are 8 - 12 campsites and 8 different hiking trails. The scenery is outstanding. The colorful rock formations & the huge Vanilla Pine Trees are a unique feature of the southwest. The dormant volcanoes litter the expanse. Hiking trips are geared to your ability level, from easy to challenging. Our favorite hike is an all day trip. We descend the trail, then go for a swim in the Rio Grande. A picnic lunch is served and then a side trip to see the petroglyphs. Then we return up the trail in the afternoon. There are easy 1/2 day hikes too. Fishing is also available, kids 12 + under do not need a license. Be prepared for hot weather in July & August. Always bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen & plenty of water. Take your time on the return trails coming back up the gorge.
The Valle Vidal is a remote section of the Carson National Forest. Far away from a town. This makes it a refuge for over 1500 Elk. There are Mile Deer, Bear, Mnt. Lion, Coyote & Wild Turkey, 200 species of Bird, 33 species of Reptile & 15 species of Fish. The Valle Vidal is a virtual zoo! Wildlife viewing and photo opportunities are abundant. We set up a base camp and go on day hikes to see old pioneer cabins and ghost towns, and go fishing at the Shuree ponds. Our campsite consists of boy scout tents & a cook tent. You will need to bring sleeping bags, warm clothing, jacket, rain coat & hiking boots. Call in advance to discuss all the details of your trip to the Valle Vidal.
Cimarron Canyon State Park is a jewel in Northern New Mexico. We long to be in the high country of Tolby Meadows. This is a strenuous hike due to the high alltitude. It sure stays cooler in the high country during the hot days of summer. The hike up to the meadows is worth the effort, there are thrilling views & scenery. Often we see Mule Deer. The easy hike takes us to waterfalls & birds galore. Cimarron Canyon is a perfect place to take the family on a hike while staying in Angel Fire or Eagle Nest. The canyon will live up to your expectations of a vibrant wildlife area!
