Hike through an unspoiled wilderness of alpine meadows and cycle forgotten backroads. Raft colorful canyons and explore ancient cliff dwellings. Add distinctive cuisine and a selection of charming inns and you have the ultimate Southwest adventure!

Description

Days 1-2 Santa Fe-Tent Rocks-Bandelier. Start the day with a hike through the unusual volcanic deposits at Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument before sampling regional cuisine at an acclaimed southwestern restaurant in Santa Fe. Then starting in the designated wilderness area of Burnt Mesa, we drop into Frijoles Canyon to end our hike at the heart of an ancient Anasazi civilization in Bandelier National Monument.

Days 3-4 Taos-Rio Grande. Accompanied by our guest naturalist, we cycle through Carson National Forest and on to Taos. Fascinating stories of the area's past are sure to spark your imagination. Then choose between a half-day of rafting on a class III section of the Rio Grande or a full day on the renowned Taos Box. Or you can simply relax and explore Taos' galleries and the ancient Taos Pueblo.

Days 5-6 Wild Rivers Scenic Area-Sangre de Cristo Mountains-Santa Fe. A nearly pedal-free descent through Carson National Forest carries us to the brink of the 600-foot-deep Rio Grande gorge. An alpine hike up Long Canyon with breathtaking views of 13,161' Mt. Wheeler, New Mexico's highest, provides a stunning finale to our southwestern adventure.

Tour Notes
  • Trip Fees include: Whitewater rafting (1/2-day), all meals (lunch Day 1-lunch Day 6), all accommodations (double occupancy), T-shirt, water bottle, support vehicle, guest naturalist, professional guides and bicycle riding instruction.
  • What weather conditions can I expect? You can expect average daytime temperatures to be between 70º and 80º F with evening temperatures being much cooler. As in other mountainous regions, weather in the Land of Enchantment can be extremely variable.
  • How will the change in altitude affect me? The Sangre de Cristo Mountains range from 7,000 feet to over 13,000 feet of elevation, and have an extremely dry climate. Thus, to prevent altitude sickness we recommend that you always remain well hydrated, gradually expose yourself to higher elevations, exercise moderately until altitude acclimatized, eat a diet consisting of at least 70% carbohydrates beginning 1 to 2 days prior to ascent, and get plenty of rest. Furthermore, we suggest that you arrive at our gateway city at least 1 to 2 days prior to the first day of your trip.
  • How difficult is this trip? ... Really: This trip is more challenging than our Easy tours. It is intended for the average active adult who feels comfortable exercising 4-6 hours a day. The hikes are 4-8 miles, with options of up to 11 miles, and include climbs of up to 1200’ with options of up to 1900 feet. The bike rides are 20-30 miles/day where some shuttling may be involved.
  • Emergency Contact Information: Our office is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mountain time, call 800-488-8483. For emergencies after hours please contact Dean Barta 303-570-4545, or Bill Marriner 720-289-0460.
  • What are the accommodations like on this trip? We strive to offer our guests a true feel for the culture of New Mexico by choosing traditional accommodations where available. The adobe walled architecture and relaxed atmosphere will take you away to another era, while providing you with a peaceful night’s rest after a day of outdoor adventure.
